The village of Gmund developed at the delta of the Mangfall River, as it was a natural obstacle on the way to the Benedictine monastery of Tegernsee. Since these waters offer an abundance of fish, fishermen and craftsmen settled at the old St. Michael's Church, which was considered the original parish of the Tegernsee Valley.

One of the most popular sights is the parish church of St. Aegidius. It was built from 1688 to 1692 by the master builder Lorenzo Sciasca in the Baroque style. Due to its mountain location, the church overlooks the entire village. Today the surrounding cemetery with all the ancient and traditional graves is enclosed by a wall.
Gmund am Tegernsee is only 17 km from the A8 highway and has a train station where the Bavarian Regional Train from Munich stops. By car it is only about 47 km to Munich.
