The village was founded in the 11th century under the name Osterinwaringau and belonged to the Tegernsee monastery at the time.
The village is particularly picturesque due to its idyllic location and the farms that sprawl out from it. The village is also a popular starting point for many hikes or cycle tours around the Taubenberg.
There are two kindergartens and two elementary school in neighboring Warngau.
Osterwarngau is best reached by car. Bus route 9567 runs about three times a day from Holzkirchen to Miesbach, while route 9566, coming from Tegernsee, stops as a school bus on weekdays. The Bayrische Oberlandbahn can be reached in Warngau.
