Newcomers to Munich must register with the registration office within 2 weeks of moving in. For this you will need the housing provider confirmation, a valid identification document and the registration form.
If Munich is not the first place of residence, an additional supplementary form for a second residence is needed.
Short Information on the Obligation to Register
If the tenant is already registered at a place in Germany, they only need to register or deregister in Munich if they stay in the apartment for more than 6 months. If the tenant lives abroad and is not yet registered in Germany, they have to register if they stay in the apartment for more than 3 months.
Registering with the KVR Munich
Each person subject to registration must register personally at the district administration office of the City of Munich. For this you have to make an appointment online.
Often times, the next free appointment is in 2-3 months. The registration office accepts later appointments that have been made within two weeks of moving in. The KVR frees up new appointments several times every day, so it is worth checking online more often.
Tip: If you urgently need a registration confirmation, you can check the website half an hour before opening time and get an appointment for the same day!
Alternatively, you can pick a number at the citizen’s offices during their opening hours and wait your turn. However, this can involve a few hours of waiting time.
