The villa quarter of Gern with its many Wilhelminian style villas deserves special mention. At the end of the 19th century this area was especially popular with artists - a fact that is still visible from the street names. Aside from this, the quarter offers many beautiful properties. Shops for all your daily needs and several restaurants, many of them upscale, can be found in the neighborhood. While you won't find the pulsating nightlife of other quarters in this district, there is a lively scene of Bavarian pubs. The proximity of Nymphenburg Palace means that residents live in the immediate vicinity of one of Munich's largest and most beautiful recreation areas. Furthermore, Hirschgarten with its famous beer garden can be found in the south, only a short walk away. Following Biedersteiner Canal towards the west, you will reach the Olympic Lake (Olympiasee) and the attached park, which is among the city's most popular sports parks. Nyphenburg-Gern is a rather quiet quarter with an excellent connection to public transport; the two U-Bahn stations Rotkreuzplatz and Westfriedhof frame the quarter in the south and north.
