The nearby quarter Martinsried is home to a large campus of Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich: The Biocampus contains the biomedical institute of LMU and the Graduate School of Life Sciences. The Max-Planck-Institute for Biochemistry and Neurobiology is also located in Planegg, making the district an important science hub. Planegg provides a relatively quiet environment for apartment rental that is nonetheless well-connected to the city center and the outskirts: The S-Bahn S6 runs every 20 minutes in both directions from the train station Planegg. Furthermore, the U6 is supposed to be extended to Martinsried until 2025, providing Planegg with direct access to the U-Bahn network.
Historically, Planegg was initially a prominent place of pilgrimage, known primarily for its church and the Maria Eich monastery, but in the 19th century it increasingly developed into a recreational area for Munich's residents.
