Ammersee
At 47 km², the lake Ammersee is the third largest lake in Bavaria. It is part of the "Fünfseenland" (five-lakes-country), along with the lakes Starnberger See, Wörthsee, Pilsensee, and Weßlinger See. Due to a still ongoing sedimentation process, which has caused the lake to shrink to a quarter of its original size over the past 20.000 years, the countryside around the lake has an abundance of birds, including some endangered species. Along its 42km of coastline, the Ammersee offers plenty of activities for bathers, sailers, surfers, and hikers. A particular treat is the "holy mountain" of Andechs with its numerous Bavarian relics and speciality beers.
